In his series, the artist has created about 500 portraits of a woman. Her name is "Zi U" and she is a sex worker in Beijing. The artist accompanied her on a normal working day. In a room next to Zi U's workplace, the artist spent an entire day - from the time Zi U got up and started working until the end of the day - taking close-ups of her face at different times of the day, often after a client had said goodbye. Along with Zi U's diary entries from that day, Xu recorded her life and moods. The project allows the reader a glimpse into the real-life situation of sex workers in China. As we flip through the pages of Zi U's personal and work life, we can also see how a Chinese woman observes and responds to the world. Zi U's face reflects not only the most intimate parts of her life, but also the true aspirations of contemporary China. This Face was published as a book in Chinese/English in Hong Kong in 2011. Because of its sensitive content, its sale is still banned in China today.
